Obscene Books cont'd
Our critics will accuse us of censorship. We don't care. We cannot allow ourselves to be deterred by stupid arguments about book banning or free speech. We must keep the focus on the real problem--our schools putting smut into the hands of minor children. There is no shortage of edifying books and materials with which to stock classrooms and school libraries. A good education has NEVER required exposure to sexually explicit books and materials--and it never will.
And so, to the charge of book banning we reply,"Guilty as charged." We DO want to ban obscene materials in our local public schools. We leave it to you to decide whether that makes us wild-eyed ‘book burners’ or merely normal people with a decent conscience trying to protect the minds and hearts of impressionable kids in our own community.

Here's a question for our critics. Some of these books are written at a grade school level. Would they agree to put these books in our grade school libraries? We suspect that they would balk at the suggestion. But why? If book banning is always wrong, why shouldn't these books be available to elementary school children? You can't have it both ways. Either book banning is always wrong and young children should have access to any and every kind of book or book banning is sometimes right and the real debate is not over book banning, but where to draw the line.

Most people do not realize that federal law actually addresses obscenity. Obscenity is NOT protected under the First Amendment right to free speech. Violating federal obscenity laws is a criminal offense. Distribution of obscene material to minors under the age of 16 is prohibited. Therefore, if the material is obscene, this is NOT a free speech issue. The material in these books is clearly obscene.

Finally, our schools should reflect the values of the majority of parents and residents of D211. We don't believe most parents or residents would support putting these kinds of materials into the hands of children--if they knew about it. Therefore it is imperative to get the news out. If we hope to protect children, the 'silent majority' must break their silence, stand up, speak up and VOTE for school board members who will protect kids from sexualization in our schools. In the upcoming election, four seats will be open, so it will be possible to actually gain a majority on the board and put an end to the abuse. We hope you will join us in this endeavor.
